Functional Training

Currently, functional training is not assumed away from training teaching and is not only a trend. Due to newest perceptions in training science and rehabilitation functional training is going to be the manner of future within the scope of increased efficiency. Many coaches still do foreground the pure muscle power whereas only the functional strength is of value.

Functional training means suitable training and is a training program for all sports. It contains exercises for a warm-up as well as for the different phases of build-up strength.

Comparing to the strength training with a machine where it adopts the stabilization of the trainee because the weight is moved on a tough given orbit, the athlete has to make for a stabilization during the motion sequence on his own while functional training. Furthermore, functional exercises contain complexe motion sequences that engross multiple muscle groups and joints simultaneously.

"Single joint movements that isolate a specific muscle are very non functional. Multi-joint movements which integrate muscle groups into movement patterns are very functional." (Gambetta and Gray 2002, §13)

Functional training contains exercises whereby the trainee has both feet on the floor without any support of a machine. So he can learn to hold his own bodyweight and to stabilize and to balance while different positions. Mostly, it is the own bodyweight that is used as a resistance. These exercises enhance the stabilization, strength, balance and speed strength and lessen the injury risk as a most important part.

Functional exercises mostly consist of squats and lunges to train the leg muscles and impulsive and pull motions for the upper body training. To boost the difficulty level these exercises are done one-legged or with a gradually unstable underground.
